"Musically resolving what you're playing on a fade-out, for clean edit" reference point is brilliant! Nothing like making the patient and tedious job of sound editing easier. I am wondering if the change(s) you suggested update the film to seem more like 40’s film noire. I love KINO so much! I also love many of the qualities of old film- including the flaws. I am a "purest" to a great degree, I suppose. But when you can truly advance the story and feel without compromising to modernization of the quality, I think that’s a good idea too.

I don’t mind at all that Sherlock Holmes is not one of the more valued classics but it does star John Barrymore and I grew up with the Sherlock Holmes Theatre on Friday nights in San Diego- (the streets were often foggy,) and the various actors who played the lead, mostly Basil Rathbone in the forties films. SO, I am a Big fan!

I am watching the Tony Awards show right now and enjoying it so much. Liza Minnelli just announced Billy Elliot as the Tony winner for Best Musical. I really loved the film and the scenes from the play I just saw.

That's a workout! Good Lord! I think you're absolutely right to play with the running speed, and agree that it drags otherwise. This demonstration of undercranking in silent comedies is fascinating! Thank you for posting this. It is an excellent visualization of what Walter Kerr wrote of in THE SILENT CLOWNS in the chapter "Fantasy Intensified: Music And The Dancing Image".

Sorry I had to miss Seventh Heaven, but I'm really glad you got The Kid Brother on the program. My all time favorite silent comedy. Really looking forward to seeing it with a live audience for the first time.

Tol'able David is one of the titles we're considering for either this year or next (there are so many!). Moose is a funny short, but I think there are others even better, like Dog Shy and His Wooden Wedding (which we showed in October with The Unknown...don't know if you saw that program). Depending on which theater we're in I'll keep bringing shorts by Chase and others; Cinema 3 can show 16mm.

Hope to see you at Wings on Tuesday...this will be our first show with theatre organ accompaniment. We gave it a dry run at January's Peter Pan and it sounds great.

Hey Ben. Thanks for posting. I try to attend all the CAC Silents and always have a great time. Looks like a really good program. I've never seen the Phantom Carriage, looking forward to it. If you're looking for ideas to round out the final months I just read Tol'able David is being added to the National Film Archive along with Charlie Chase's Mighty Like Moose (One of my all time favorites), they would be good choices.... Love the blog posts.
